BACKGROUND

The global energy system is undergoing a profound transformation driven by climate change imperatives, geopolitical tensions, rising energy demand, and rapid technological advancements. This convergence has intensified the global energy crisis, exposing vulnerabilities in energy security, affordability, and sustainability across all regions.

At the same time, the accelerated shift toward renewable energy systems such as solar, wind, hydro, hydrogen, and smart grid technologies signals a fundamental restructuring of how energy is produced, distributed, and consumed. However, this transition is not only technological; it is deeply dependent on the availability of a skilled and adaptable workforce.

For the 16 member countries of the Colombo Plan Staff College (CPSC), this presents both a challenge and a strategic opportunity. While investments in renewable energy are increasing, there remains a critical shortage of technicians, trainers, and specialists equipped with the green and digital skills required to support the energy transition.

In this context, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions play a pivotal role in bridging the skills gap. By embedding green competencies, digital technologies, and industry-responsive training into their systems, TVET can directly contribute to energy resilience, economic growth, and environmental sustainability.

This webinar provides a platform for knowledge exchange among educators, policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers to explore how TVET systems can respond effectively to the energy transition. It also supports key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

FOCUS OF THE WEBINAR

This webinar examines the strategic role of TVET in supporting the global energy transition through skills development, curriculum innovation, and institutional collaboration.

It reflects the following SDGs:

SDG 4: Quality Education - strengthening the integration of green and digital skills in TVET curricula to prepare learners for emerging energy sector demands.

SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy - supporting the development of a skilled workforce capable of advancing renewable energy systems and energy efficiency solutions.

SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth - enhancing employability and workforce readiness in the growing green economy.

SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure - promoting innovation, technology adoption, and stronger TVET-industry linkages in the energy sector.

SDG 13: Climate Action - contributing to climate resilience through sustainable skills development and environmentally responsible practices.

Discussions will explore key themes such as renewable energy technologies, green skills requirements, curriculum transformation, industry partnerships, and policy frameworks that enable TVET systems to respond effectively to the energy transition.

OBJECTIVES

  • To enhance understanding of the global energy transition and its implications for TVET systems.
  • To strengthen the capacity of TVET institutions in developing green and renewable energy skills.
  • To promote curriculum innovation aligned with sustainable energy and emerging industry needs.
  • To foster collaboration among TVET institutions, industry, and policymakers in advancing the energy transition agenda.

TARGET PARTICIPANTS

This webinar is designed for TVET educators, trainers, institutional leaders, curriculum developers, researchers, policymakers, and industry practitioners engaged in energy, sustainability, and workforce development. It also targets stakeholders from Colombo Plan member countries committed to advancing green skills, renewable energy adoption, and sustainable development.

DATE AND TIME

The webinar is scheduled on May 26, 2025 from 2:00 to 4:30 PM (Philippine time), and will be conducted via CPSC Zoom Platform and YouTube live streaming.
