2 newest books launched on CPSC’s 36th year

CPSC launched on December 1, 2009 two new publications on the occasion of its commemoration of the College’s 36th year. The publication of the books entitled TVET Agenda: Transforming Ideas into Action and Research in TVET made easy form part of CPSC’s revitalization of its research and development initiatives.

A compilation of international initiatives, innovative practices and case studies from a series of conferences, fora and seminar organized by CPSC from 2008 to 2009 in collaboration with various partners is consolidated in a hardbound book entitled “TVET Agenda: Transforming Ideas into Actions.” The book compiles full papers from various activities which served as productive avenues to assemble ideas transformed into actions, and actions taken as imperatives to unlock key challenges and limitations in TVET.
Themes covered in the book include: skill development for poverty alleviation, public-private partnership in TVET, emerging trends in ICT in education, emerging challenges of TVET in the present financial crisis and reorienting TVET policy towards education for sustainable development.
The book outlines the new agenda in TVET drawn as outcomes and integrated recommendations under relevant thematic issues and concerns. The book intends to cater to the interest of policymakers, practitioners, administrators, education planners, researchers, teachers and teacher educators, students in both developed and developing countries in Asia Pacific region and beyond.

Executive Summary
The Asia Pacific Region has distinguished itself in the past decade as the world’s most rapidly developing region. The Region has its own unique features. Today, developed and developing economies co-exist in the region. In spite impressive progress in the recent past, a growing body of evidence also points to serious problems in education, human resources development, sustainable development and related issues that require urgent attention if the Region is to sustain its progress and complete the job of eradicating poverty.

Further, up-speeding technological evolution and globalization characterize today’s and future lives of graduates coming from Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system. It is very crucial for all institutions in the Region involved in TVET to keep pace and to anticipate future needs to match the demands for technically skilled workforce with huge jobs requirement foreseen few years from now. One of the basic foundations to link technical human resources development with labor market opportunities is to have available evidence-based data and information that could stimulate policy, curricular reforms, pedagogical focus and further research initiatives. Emerging issues and problems needing methodical system of planning, investigation, analysis and recommendations must be solved utilizing pedagogical and scientific processes. To continue harnessing stronger research culture in TVET and make available such data and research outcomes, CPSC  has come up with a useful guide in doing research in TVET.  The book is about the practical and systematic way of doing research with emphasis on TVET-oriented topics and problems.

The book is divided into seven chapters, namely: (1) Nature of research and its tools, (2) Types of Research, (3) Practical Planning in Research, (4) Social Science and Technical Developmental Research, (5) Data Analysis, Summary, Conclusions and Recommendations, (6) Organization of the Research Report, and (7) ICT-enabled Education Research. The guidebook  is intended for use by teachers, budding and professional researchers and those involved in planning or undertaking research activities as well as teaching methodical foundation for conducting actual researches.

Highlights of CPSC’s 35 Years in TVET

A soft launching of CPSC’s publications was among the highlights of the anniversary celebration. Dr. Majumdar announced the publication of an anniversary book capturing the 35 years of CPSC’s beginning and achievements entitled “35 and Beyond: Generations of TVET Innovations in the Asia Pacific Region” during the anniversary dinner.
Various CPSC member countries such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand enjoined in the commemoration of the birth of CPSC through their messages featured in the anniversary book. CPSC’s mother organization, Colombo Plan through the anniversary message of Colombo Plan Secretariat Secretary-General, Patricia Yoon-Moi Chia joined in the milestone celebration as well.
CPSC’s hosting country the Philippines, conveyed their gratitude for the contributions the College has continuously provided in the country throughout 35 years of its existence as expressed in the message of the President of the Philippines, Her Excellency President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo featured in the Anniversary book.
