Bhutan Minister of Labour visits CPSC

The Colombo Plan Staff College for Technician Education (CPSC) welcomed to CPSC Honorable Lyonpo Dorji Wangdi, Minister of Labour and Human Resources of the Royal Kingdom of Bhutan on January 08, 2010. The visit was part of an official mission to the Philippines to learn various initiatives in the TVET sector which could serve as guide in furthering Bhutan’s efforts in job creation, a large percentage of which targeted in the TVET sector.
Prof. Shyamal Majumdar, Ph.D., Director General, together with CPSC’s Faculty and Staff, welcomed the dignitary’s visit with a highly enriching discussion and sharing of strategic approaches in escalating TVET sector’s contribution in nation building. He shared various case studies in relevant Colombo Plan countries which, like Bhutan, are mounting practical approaches to address poverty through capacity building in TVET field. The College has been a strong supporter of Bhutan’s TVET development and has conducted various capacity building programs for Bhutanese technical teachers, trainors and administrators in the TVET field.

Employment, particularly youth employment, is one of major considerations in Bhutan today. The MoLHR has the plan to create 75,000 job vacancies in the remaining period of the implementation of the country’s 10th Five year Plan (July 2008-June 2013). Fifty thousand of said job vacancies are targeted in TVET sector.  In order to institute further developments and diversify TVET approaches to present issues in Bhutan, the head of the MoLHR visited CPSC and other TVET institutions in the Philippine to learn and familiarize himself with advanced  practices in the field.
He was accompanied by Mr. Sangay Dorjee, Director of Occupational Standards, MoHLR and Ms. Sonam Namgyel, Desk Officer, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kingdom of Bhutan.
